Professional associations everywhere
are searching for ways to generate non-dues income. Other
than depending upon vendors, in 75 words or less, how would
you create non-dues income at the chapter, state, regional,
and national levels of NALS?
Form a partnership with a technology provider
to augment member services and fund our own technology infrastructure
by partnering with an ISP to provide discount dial-up, website
hosting, and design services to members and gain a T1 connection
to the association office at a low rate.
The economic downturn has forced people
to re-evaluate and re-prioritize their lives. In 75 words
or less, what NALS values would you stress to convince an out-of-work
member to renew their membership? Describe in detail
what you would say.
I would remind them of all the benefits
they derive from being a member. In our chapter we
have an employment chair, a person who keeps track of job
openings in the local community, and when we are looking
we submit our resume to her and she sends it out. In
addition, the constant CLE is a great marketing tool. Over
all the benefits outweigh the financial considerations.
Thinking big is not a new concept. The NALS
Think Big! Campaign encourages members to stretch their imaginations
seeking solutions based on the premise that if there were
no limits whatsoever, there is nothing NALS could not achieve. In
350 words or less, describe a brilliant idea conceived by
you in your professional career or NALS career, explaining
how you brought the idea to fruition, and describe the outcome.
TechBytes immediately comes to mind. When I joined
the @Law team, I proposed that we publish a quarterly article
to help with the transition from Word Perfect to Microsoft
Word. Everyone I ran into seemed to either have a problem
or know someone who was having a problem with the transition
and Microsoft Word was fast becoming the word processor of
choice. Our office was forced into it by one of our
clients who would not accept any other format. I envisioned
a section devoted to comparing the features of the two programs
and helping others do their tasks more quickly and with less
stress by showing how to force Word to do the things everyone
was used to doing in Word Perfect. I am hoping that
this section will continue to be of benefit by providing
tips on how to make the computer work for you in getting
your task completed with the least angst.
After 26 years with the Air Force, Jeannie
retired from military service to Gulfport, Mississippi. Her
civilian career began with a position as a paralegal/office
manager for a sole practitioner in general practice. Almost
from the start, Jeannie has been involved in leadership roles. She
has also been involved in a wide variety of committees since
first serving as Chairman of the Annual Meeting Program Committee
and Scholarship Committee in 1999 at the local level. Including
chairing the NALS Advanced Training Course where she prepared
brochures and course materials, introduced speakers, administered
the exams and prepared the certificates of completion. She
also created a set of crossword puzzles based on the NALS Basic
and Advanced Manuals for the Lawyer's Assistant which were
distributed to each student as additional study guides and
later published in html format for on-line study. Eventually,
the puzzles were combined onto a CD for sale as a swap meet
item at the National Forum. Jeannie has been involved
with the Professional Development Committee (2004-5) and the
Text Development Committee (2005-2008). She has written articles
for E-News and hosted on-line learning sessions as part of
the Professional Development Committee and is directly involved
in reviewing both the NALS Basic and Advanced Manuals for the
Lawyer's Assistant, along with the study guides and teacher's
manuals as part of her responsibilities on the Text Development
Committee. She co-authored an article for E-Learn on Microsoft
Word usage. She is the inspiration behind the @Law feature
article, TechBytes writing many of the articles published under
this feature and is currently chair of the @Law committee.
Endorsements
Jeannie is an extremely active member
who tends to lead by example. She
has been very instrumental in assisting our local members with
continuing legal education and developing their leadership skills
while advancing her own education and certification. I
believe Jeannie has the experience, knowledge, dedication and
enthusiasm necessary to meet the requirements of Education Director
and I encourage other members of NALS to vote for her.

Wilson, PP, PLS
Past Region 6 Director
Jeannie has been a dedicated officer and
served all levels of this association well. She has served and continues to
serve on the local and state levels in many offices and committee
chairmanships. She is a Past President for Mississippi
Legal Professionals Association formerly Mississippi Division
of NALS. She has served the local chapter in all offices
and currently serves as President. She is a true professional
willing to help others whether it is sharing her knowledge and
support or just lending a listening ear. She manages to
serve as secretary to her attorneys and still make time to help
the other employees in her office and in other offices when they
have questions or are uncertain about court procedures, computer
programs or any other aspect relating to the legal profession. Jeannie
is always there as a friend to lend support and offer encouragement.
I would highly recommend Jeannie for the office of Education
director. Thank you for considering her and her qualifications.
Nancy
Gates, PP, PLS, CLAS
Past State President
Jeannie Shaw, PP, PLS has strived to provide the best educational
opportunities possible for her
local chapter members as well as the members of Mississippi. Jeannie has been
involved in the
Legal Training Courses on the Gulf Coast ever since I joined NALS seven years
ago. She has
coordinated the classes, found the speakers, taught classes herself when necessary.
Jeannie is
very passionate about education and she will make a wonderful Education Director.
Jeannie’s
platform has always been Education and I believe it will continue to always
be. Not only does
she strive to provide education for her members, she goes above and beyond
in her own quest to
continue enhancing her own education. I know of no one better suited to serve
NALS as
Education Director than Jeannie Show.
