Instructions for NALS Committee Selection Answer Mary Jo Denman’s challenge to “Maximize Your Potential” in 2005-6! Maximize your membership and volunteer to become a member of the NALS Leadership Team. If you want to share in the excitement and be an integral part of your national association, simply fill out the form below and send it to Cathy Hankins, PP, PLS. Taking an active role in the workings of NALS enhances your membership, makes it more rewarding for you personally, and is an outstanding way for you to reach your own personal goals of professional development! What Committees Do: The function of the committees is to implement programs and products based on direction from the Board of Directors, the Strategic Plan, and recommendations from the previous year’s committees, contingent on funding and/or sponsorships. Each committee has a “tech resource” individual assigned to work on the committee who liaisons with the Web Team. How Committee Members Communicate: Currently there is no funding for committee meetings; however, committees and task force members are encouraged to meet at the Professional Development Conference in Tulsa in March and the National Forum in October. Committees are encouraged to use whatever means possible for frequent communication with each other. Frequent communication is truly the key to the committee’s success. Most of the NALS committees hold monthly meetings in the NALS Online Learning Center, as this is one of the most economical ways to function as a committee. Email, telephone, fax, or regular U.S. mail are also effective avenues for communication. Task forces will assist committees through assignments via the committee chairs or the NALS President. 2005-6 Committees, Responsibilities, Task Forces, and Liaisons: The responsibilities, task forces, and/or projects listed below under each committee are subject to change as necessary for development of certain programs, and may already reflect some anticipated changes for 2006-7. Each committee is asked to appoint a Communications Liaison (i.e., Leading The Way and E-News, etc.) who will coordinate their committee’s submissions to the referenced publications. @Law: This committee oversees the publication of NALS’ quarterly magazine and the monthly publication, e-Learn@NALS. Layout, cover art, etc., are the responsibility of the NALS Staff, with suggestions from the committee. The committee’s responsibilities include:
Certifying Board: This committee consists of at least nine NALS members who serve for at least two years (this shorter term became effective with the 2004-2005 NALS year – prior commitment was a three-year term) and who must be PP and/or PLSs in good standing; plus two non-NALS members. Although a PLS may fall under the category of “voluntary recertification,” she or he must recertify in order to serve on the Certifying Board. In order to receive exam-related training (including statistics and exam preparation), it is imperative that, during the two-year term, Certifying Board members are available to attend each Professional Development conference held in Tulsa in March. The Certifying Board also meets at the October National Forum and this meeting is important to attend. The Certifying Board is responsible for all issues directly related to the certification examinations. The duties of the committee’s chair and vice chair include: reviewing and updating policy manuals related to certification; ensuring programs and products are properly aligned; overseeing exam preparation; and certification day-to-day decision-making. Committee members work on various projects based on their interests and talents, which include, but are not limited to:
Education: This committee investigates and develops education in various forms to meet the needs of NALS members. The committee provides the materials necessary for educational programs, including legal training courses and certification study materials. Education Seminars is the new subcommittee under Education and it develops, updates, and maintains materials that can be purchased by chapters/states/regions/law firms/schools. These materials will include everything you need to hold an educational seminar including a syllabus, handouts, discussion questions (they do not do mocks - that is Ed Products), and a Power Point presentation. Some of the projects the Education committee oversees and is responsible for include:
Marketing: The Marketing Committee’s responsibilities and goals are:
Membership: The membership committee’s responsibilities include assisting state and local membership chairmen in recruitment and retention of NALS members and also include:
NALS Foundation Board of Trustees: The NALS Foundation is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit educational foundation dedicated to improving the value of the legal professional through education, research, and other activities. Foundation trustees are responsible for internal and external fundraising and developing collaborative support for its programs. The NALS Foundation funds:
Professional Development Committee: Committee responsibilities include:

Web Team: The Web Team oversees and assists with delivering technological education and communications to NALS members. Responsibilities of this committee include:
