This year NALS held its first-ever NALS 2017 Leadership Appreciation Day. This day is reserved to recognize all current leadership and volunteers that make NALS function to its highest quality.

Volunteers are at the heart of NALS' work and success!

Because of the contributions of volunteers’ time, talent, and expertise, NALS is able to provide the essential education and tools, a vibrant online community, and exceptional experiences and relationships that we all value so highly.

Each year over 150 volunteers step into various roles on the national,  state, and/or local chapter platforms in order to fulfill and continue the mission of NALS. This year, NALS celebrated with the theme of 'NALS Loves Our Volunteers!'

In addition to having this event annually, NALS Board of Directors along with NALS Resource Center have chosen a 'Volunteer of the Year.'

From our national pool of volunteers and leadership, one person that exemplifies the true definition of character, dependability, and leadership will be chosen and honored with this award.

For 2017, that person is Theresa Marchese, PLS from Tennessee.

Her 'can do' attitude will affect generations of NALS members and legal support professionals to come. Recently as the Editorial Board Chair, she has produced and innovated NALS' publications, such as @LAW and the NALS docket, taking them to new heights of readership, by curating and delivering content that is relevant to the legal support profession today.

Theresa is a great example of what it means to be a great leader and volunteer. When asked by NALS Meetings and Communications Manager Lydia Goodner, 'What has driven you?' Theresa responded, ‘Ultimately, whatever I do reflects not only on me as a person but, more importantly, on NALS.  My hope is to never damage reputations by not fulfilling what I promised and set out to do.  That has pushed me to produce the best with every project and deadline.’

She also has this message for other NALS volunteers, 'If I could speak to every chairperson and committee member, I would say your service to the members of NALS is extremely important.  As you serve, always be mindful you are a vital part of NALS.  Without you, there would be a hole in the committees and in the hearts and minds of NALS.  If you take on the responsibility to be on a committee or to lead a committee, do it as you would your job.  Be professional, responsive, and know that your deadlines are important and keep things going at NALS.  Lead with integrity, joy, and love.  I am proud to be a nerd and thankful and honored that I was able to serve as chair of the Editorial Board.  I tried to do a good job and to make Cindy Squier, from whom I took over this committee, proud each and every day.  I hope I was successful in that.'

NALS coordinated with her employer, Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis, LLP, to present the award in-person by NALS Resource Center Staffer, Lydia Goodner. Nina Smith, with Human Resources at the firm, was able to coordinate not only with us about meeting and surprising Theresa but also allowed us to have a conference room and invited several of her peers to join in the presentation of the award to Theresa.

After 2017, Theresa will be stepping down as chair of the Editorial Board with the full support of NALS on any future endeavors she has planned for herself. She has been an incredible asset and great friend of NALS!

Congratulations, Theresa!
