Closing the Loop on Member Communications

Have you ever wondered if someone has received your letter, e-mail or phone call?  You never received a response confirming one way or another?  Remember, when you send out or receive communication from others, the simple courtesy of an acknowledgment goes a long way.  Respond to them as quickly as possible.  What if you don’t know?  Then tell them so.  If you don’t know what they need, a simple response that you don’t know but you will find out and get back with them as soon as you have received an answer to their request.  That makes the other person feel important and you are dealing with their issue.  Diary the issue to follow-up with them in a short period to see if the information you got for them is what they needed.  Don’t ever make someone feel ignored.  You lose members that way.

Marketing Committee

It is important to get your chapter or state name known.  A media tool kit is an important part of that process.  The following is the first part of a two-part article setting out how to prepare a media tool kit, and is taken from page 43 of the “Marketing Tool Kit.”

Making a Media Kit - What It Is and Why You Need It
A press or media kit is a resume for your association.  It’s a collection of information and articles put together to inspire interest from media, potential members, schools and employers.  The goal is to create a press kit that grabs the reader’s attention, creates a killer impression, helps them remember you, and makes them hunger to know more.  A media kit contains information that will help reporters write an accurate story.  It should include whatever facts you want them to know.  Contents can include, among other things,

  • a history of your association
  • professional profiles of key officers
  • black and white or color photos
  • a fact sheet
  • a business card
  • recent press releases
  • a brochure
  • product sample
  • small logo item

Media kits help reporters save time and improve accuracy, because everything is included.  Sometimes reporters copy entire paragraphs of information found in media kits, particularly when they are on deadline.  It is convenient, and they don’t have to spend time calling the source to ask for more information or double-check numerous facts.  The traditional press kit is a collection of articles and information packaged in a presentation folder and sent via mail.

Want to be on the cutting edge?  Since the advent of e-books, now you can create your press kit as a PDF file that you put on disk and mail out.

Or, get it on the net!  If you have a Web site put together an online press kit.  This keeps visitors abreast of your company’s latest news and events and accomplishments.  An additional advantage of an online press kit is being able to include audio and video clips.

NALS Foundation

Watch for the Scholarship Recipient ribbon when you are in Tulsa at the Professional Development Conference in March.

Why you ask?  You will be meeting the future leaders of NALS!

The NALS Foundation recognized the need to “grow new leaders” and created a scholarship program to assist our members in attending the conference and the Future Leaders task force created a program designed just for them.

Welcome this group of members and watch them as they grow into the next generation of NALS leaders.  And you can always say “I knew them when. . .”
