Around the World in 60 Days It always seems like once
we celebrate Memorial Day our summer is on the
fast-track and before we know it, Labor Day has
arrived and the kids are back in school. We
have graduations, weddings, picnics, trips to
the beach, and family vacations, among other
activities. Of course, let's not forget
the NALS regional conferences. This summer
there are eight conferences being held in various
parts of the country, offering outstanding educational
and networking opportunities for our members. Regional
conferences have the same flair and flavor of
a NALS conference, but on a smaller scale. ...read

Electronic Mail - Is it
a blessing or a curse? The use of email has
most definitely made our lives easier; especially
when communicating with members of an association
such as ours where committees are made up of
people all across the United States, or in
the case of our state associations – all
across our state. We are able to work on NALS
work when we have a minute, knowing that when
we send out a message everyone is also able
to read and respond to that message when they
have time. We are not interrupting anyone during
a busy time at work, during an important television
show in the evening, during a family meal,
or when putting the kids to bed. Email is cheaper
and faster than a letter, less intrusive than
a phone call, and less hassle than a FAX. By
using email, differences in location and time
zone are less of an obstacle to communication. ...read

What's Your Goal? Do you ever feel like you’re
drifting through life, on some invisible lost
highway? Millions of people live from day to
day with no thought of what the future might
bring, willing to roll with whatever life sends
their way. Is that the best way to live? Who’s
to say?
Many of us prefer to live “do-it-all,
have-it-all” lives, intent on achieving
success in every facet. We’re not content
with being rolling stones but, at the same time,
we struggle and wonder whether we’ll ever
achieve that state of having it all. Sometimes
we’re not even sure how to tell when we’ve
reached that level we’re so intent on seeking.
We get mired down in the details and sometimes
we get lost. It’s a tough, cold road. But
there’s a simple way to overcome that lost
feeling and achieve a sense of purpose. Accomplish
something. And that leads us to today’s
topic: setting goals. ...read

Friends + Motivation + Mentoring
+ Fear = NALS Why did we first join
NALS? Was it because we had a friend
who invited us to attend a meeting? You
may have said to yourself, “Why bother?” Or “I
don’t have time for that.” We
have busy lives, with family and children and
other activities. In reality, however,
the time you spend bettering yourself is time
well spent. The key to association membership,
of course, is networking. By attending
conferences and seminars, you take your membership
one step further and join your friends for
educational, informative, fun and productive
times. You then go home and tell your
family members and friends, and most importantly,
your colleagues, what you learned and why they
should plan on attending the next seminar or
conference. ...read

From the NALS Foundation “Summertime and the
living is easy,” or so the song says. But
summertime can mean traveling and sometimes traveling
can be anything but easy. So if you are
getting ready for a summer trip whether it be
for fun or maybe to a regional meeting (or maybe
not a summer trip, but a trip in the fall to
Reno), here are a few tips to help make the traveling
a little easier. ...read

From the Membership Committee Do you need sample letters
to send to non-members in your area telling them
what NALS purpose is, benefits, and/or general
information? The Travel Tips document located
on the website (leaders section) http://www.nals.org/leaders/membershipreports/NALSTravelTips.doc and
the nals.org (book 5) http://www.nals.org/nalsorg/index.html has
excellent examples of letters. However,
the following letter was written by Marion Sarcuni,
president of NALS of New York City. Marion
has given permission for you to use this letter
to make contact with non-members in your area. ...read
