Not Enough, Too Much, Not Me Certification
Perhaps you think you do not have enough experience
or you think you have too much experience or you
think you are not a secretary. Well, when it
comes to professional certifications, NALS has thought
of all of that. We all know that NALS membership
is open to those “engaged in work of a legal nature,”
and NALS offers certifications to nearly all legal
professionals. read more...

The "Best of the Best" Will Be In Tulsa
In March 2007 - Will You?
Each year, the NALS Foundation is pleased to sponsor
the NALS Jett Awards. Established in 1994, and named
after NALS founder, Eula Mae Jett, the Jett Awards is
an annual competition in which states and chapters outline
their successful programs and submit them for review
by an Awards Committee. The Jett Awards program was developed
with a two-fold purpose in mind. First to recognize the
“Best of the Best” programs throughout NALS and second
to provide a resource of proven successful program guidelines
for other states and chapters to emulate and adapt for
their own use. read more...
I Am Thankful...
As I was trying to think of a theme for an article
for this month’s Leading the Way, I thought what
better time of the year to reflect on the many
benefits I receive as a member of NALS. We definitely
have an advantage over our nonmember legal community. We
are personally acquainted with legal personnel
throughout the United States and if we have a
question about anything related to law in a different
state, we can contact someone we personally met
at a NALS conference. What
a benefit to our law firms. What if you
haven’t attended a NALS conference (and I would
ask you, why not – more on this later) and don’t
know who to contact? You can send an e-mail
or call the NALS Resource Center with the topic
and state and they will give you a contact person
in that area. You can also log onto the
NALS web site and go into the State and Chapter
area. Many of them have their own web sites
with contact people listed for the various states. For
this I am thankful. read more...
An Argument for and Against Professional
Jurors
We recently had a Justice Court Judge speak at
our local chapter meeting. He mentioned in passing
that that some countries in the world use professional
jurors instead of lay jurors. I had never heard of this
before and started thinking about the feasibility of
using professional jurors in America. read more...
Regulation
Update
We research paralegal regulation and licensure and other
issues affecting legal professionals via NetScan,
a research service; Internet research; trade magazines,
etc. Research shows that regulation of paralegals
is being introduced, enforced, and/or overseen by
different entities, i.e., supreme courts and/or bar
associations (often times through paralegal committees/divisions). It
has also become apparent that we are now dealing
with two components regarding regulation. read more...
We Raised a Ruckus in Reno!
It's hard to believe that the 55th annual conference
is in the history books. I think I speak for
all of us when I say we had a great time at the conference. Many
members added a side trip to San Francisco at the
front or back end of the conference, for a fun vacation
in addition to the conference. We know our
members love to travel and see the sites of our conference
cities. With that thought in mind, we are changing
the schedule for our 2007 conference to allow conference
attendees to see the sites of St. Louis. We
hope you will meet us in St. Louis for the 56th annual
conference October 11-14, 2007. read more...

Welcome Back to the Tribe
At the P/PE Workshop in Tulsa earlier this year I spoke
about finding sources for President’s Messages. Many
of the issues our leaders seek guidance on (motivation,
attrition, conflict resolution) are common to every
organization and inspiration can be found everywhere,
even in “junk” mail or in newsletters and publications
that cross your desk. read more...
