My Experience on the Education
Committee
by Joyce Bassett, PP, PLS
President-elect Julie Abernathy is looking for members to fill positions for the 2009-2010 term. So I am going to shamelessly put in a plug for the Education Committee!
I must admit to being hesitant to join a NALS committee at first. I was an association member several years before even thinking about it. I am not a very outgoing person and being part of a NALS committee is an excellent opportunity to meet and get to know our NALS leaders as well as other committee members (and don’t forget about that “little thing” called personal growth).
The first committee that I worked on was the NEI Committee and that came about because one of our state officers (Yeah, Missouri!) was chairman of that committee and asked me to become a member. It was a nice way to ease into working on a national committee. After that, I was a member of the Text Development Subcommittee for one year. For the next three years, I was a member of the Education Products Subcommittee. This year, I worked on the Education Seminars Subcommittee. I have had the pleasure of working with many fine NALS leaders such as Nancy Harris, Patti Infanti, Karen McElroy, Cindy Root, and Jeanne Preston.
Though I will admit being a member of the Education Committee can be a lot of work, it is very satisfying and rewarding. There are several subcommittees so “something for everyone.”
Challenge: I encourage all members to consider becoming a NALS committee member. There are many committees to choose from, and you will be welcomed into any of them. (Of course, the Education Committee would welcome you the most!!)
