LEADERSHIP TOOLS FOR EVERYONE

All of us are leaders whether or not we recognize ourselves as such.  Someone is watching what we do and deciding whether to emulate or reject our actions.  We become better leaders through our NALS training and share common goals with all of our members, one of which is the success of our association.

Several years ago, a friend gave me some meditation stones that were smooth to the touch and were engraved with symbols and words.  The words were inspiring and helped me think of the many leadership roles within our association in a different light.  The question in my mind was how to simplify and create usable tools from these stones.  This is what evolved as my essential Tools of the Trade.  The tools you need are:

  1. A firm foundation upon which to cultivate the rewards of your office for the benefit of the members.
  2. A pen by which to record the milestones reached during your term.
  3. A symbol by which to be recognized, i.e., an association pin, logo, etc.
  4. Ear plugs to tune out any negativity.
  5. Work with a common purpose and positive attitude.
  6. A calculator to help you measure the risks.
  7. The ability to imagine the future and make it happen.
  8. Creativity to help establish what you envision.
  9. You must feel life so that you are not out-of-touch with your members.
  10. Know that life counts, family comes first with all of its responsibilities, be they spiritual, life-altering events, and/or relocations.
  11. Love what you do and let it show.
  12. Have the persistence of a turtle to win the race because change does not occur overnight – it is an ever-evolving process.
  13. Bubbles to help keep you young at heart and remind you that your responsibilities can be fun.

Our potential as leaders is boundless.  With our opportunities for continuing legal education, certification, and professional development, we are valuable and unstoppable.  Your potential may yet be untapped – turn it loose and reach for the gold ring.  Be committed and meet the challenge – become an effective leader.
