Views from a Student
From the Membership Committee
Recently I asked one of our members, who started in our
association as a Student Member, to answer a few questions
regarding her thoughts on NALS. In doing this, I
thought we could find out how to better serve our student
members and encourage them to continue as NALS members
once they had started in the work force.
Julianna Durie was very happy to answer my questions. My
questions were, why did you join, what do you feel is important
in your membership with NALS and if you have any suggestions
(or criticisms) about student membership, what are they. I
am happy to share her answers with you and hope that they
will help you in gaining and retaining student members.
“When I was asked by a fellow classmate why I joined NALS,
I told her I joined NALS for the education and networking
opportunities. At the local, state and national levels
there are so many ways to receive education. I have
taken advantage of the CLE presentations at both the local
and state levels and the online CLE presentations by NALS. I
feel the classes/presentations through NALS added value
to the education that I was already receiving through college.
While receiving education through NALS, I was also able
to network at both the local and state levels. I
found many colleagues and friends at NALS. The opportunities
for networking were extremely useful for a student who
had no connections in the legal field. I found my
first job through a local chapter member.
I believe the website for student members could be improved
with more student information.” The Membership Committee
encourages students to contact them with ideas and suggestions
for the website.
We thank Juli for her suggestions and hope they will help
your chapter in obtaining and retaining student members. I
would like to state that Juli has become an important member,
both in our local and state chapter. I am sure it won’t
be long before you be seeing her as a state officer and serving
on a NALS committee.
