Education
Rocks!
It’s just possible that there’s an age problem
in the NALS Education Committee. Our fearless
leader, Cindy Root, showed up at Tulsa wearing
a tie-dyed T-shirt with flowers in her hair. She
said her son had the peace symbol and wouldn’t
give it up. Bearing in mind that the ’60s
are 40 years ago—that’s a bit scary. Be
all that as it may, this year’s theme for the
Education Committee is “Education Rocks!” And
if you don’t believe that, consider this...

Return
on Certification Investment
During the leadership training sessions in Tulsa
this past weekend, I heard the term “ROI” or
“return on investment” several times. It
got me thinking about what return on my investment
in certification I have received. Before
I studied for the PLS exam and having never worked
in litigation, I didn’t know the difference between
a plaintiff and a defendant. Passing the
PLS exam gave me the faith in myself that I could
learn anything, and I have been working in the
litigation field for more than 10 years and I
now know the difference between a plaintiff and
a defendant. ROI = confidence.

Use the
Easy Button and Make a Difference
"Some people come into our lives and
quickly go. Some stay for awhile and
leave footprints on our hearts. And we
are never, ever the same."
You never know
what kind of impact you will have on another
member. Two days before the start of
the new year my local chapter lost a very special
member. Helen M. Watkins was 95 years
young when she left us. Although I knew
she wouldn't be around forever, she had been
around forever - for as long as I have been
a member. Over the years she had mentored
and encouraged so many members to get involved
and become active NALS members. In fact,
if not for her encouragement (and insistence),
I probably wouldn't be serving as NALS president.

Beware
the Door You Open...It May Just Lead to Your
Future!
I just got back from my first Professional
Development Conference in Tulsa. WOW, what
an experience! I arrived early Thursday
afternoon, checked in and went to register. I
had gone to the conference in the capacity of
Membership Chair for the NALS of Tucson & So.
AZ chapter. At first I wasn’t able to find anyone
else from Arizona, either from Tucson’s chapter
or the Arizona State chapter. Going over the
schedule, I realized there were Membership sessions
going on Thursday afternoon, so I hunted down
the room and walked on in.

Leaders
That Make a Difference
If you thought you could make a difference, would
you be willing to try? If you discovered
you possessed leadership qualities and skill,
would you use them? If you knew that you
could motivate others to make a difference, would
you be inspired to do so?

Regulation/Certification
We have been asked what this committee is all about.
This appears to be a good time to enlighten our members
regarding what this committee does and how very important
it is that all members watch the activities in their
states and help us in our research. The primary
role of this committee is to research regulation
issues and other issues affecting legal professionals
and report the findings to the members of NALS.
