Message from Cathy Hankins,
PP, PLS, NALS President NALS
can't spell S CCESS without U and the success of
NALS depends on YOU!
You
have probably noticed that my column in @LAW is
called Communicate and Participate. This
year's NALS board is committed to keeping the lines
of communication open among all of the members,
whether it is by letter, phone, e-mail or carrier
pigeon. We are always available to listen
to your comments and suggestions, and encourage
you to let us hear from you. You can call
us or send us an e-mail message or call us on the
phone. We even love to get mail the old fashioned
way. Do you have a question you need an answer
to? Is there something you don't understand? Then
ask us. We are doing our part to communicate
with all of the members and will continue to make
our members aware of what's going on in NALS. ...read

Playing
the Recertification Blues
Unfortunately,
from the time you obtain your PLS or PP, you need
to start thinking about and working toward recertification. All
PPs and most PLSs need 75 recertification hours. So,
over a period of five years, you’re going
to need to average 15 hours of CLE a year.
Of
course, you could recertify by retaking the exam. I’m
sometimes jokingly referred to as “Marsha
Smitherman, PP, PLS, PLS,” because I recertified
my PLS last time by retaking the exam. I
had trouble convincing my study group students
to try the then-new one-day exam, so I did it myself. Given
the cost of recertification hours, it may be cheaper,
but there’s the gamble of how long it’s
going to take you to pass—luckily, I got
through the second time on the first try (by then
I knew how to study). However, I have no
desire to take the PP again. Ever. ...read

What's the Hype?
I
think that those of you who are not certified wonder
from time to time what all the hype is regarding

and attending NALS meetings, you’re doing enough,
right? Not exactly. ...read

Bad Decision/Good Decision Look
up the word “association” in your dictionary. The
main definition is “an organization of people
with a common purpose and having a formal structure.” Some
other words used to define “association” include: “friendship” and “connection.”
Membership
in this tri-level organization is one of the best
decisions I have made in my life. Believe
me—I have made some wrong decisions. I
made the wrong decision TWICE before making the
right one. It is never too late to make the
right decision. ...read
