Certification Program - Feedback/Testimonial Responses
Responses Certifications Held

Since receiving my NALS certification in March 2015, I received a promotion and pay increase at my current place of employment. I also have a greater understanding of legal procedures, and greatly improved my knowledge of grammar, which I use every day in my current position of Executive Legal Assistant!

ALP

The knowledge that I have gained while obtaining my NALS credentials has increased my confidence, my abilities, and the responsibilities that I have been given in my work. That in turn has resulted in pay raises. In actual figures, I make $3/hour more than I did before I gained my first NALS credential.

PP

My NALS certification has made me feel better about myself. I am proud that I have passed the test and am certified. I believe the self confidence my certification/recertification gives me helps me do a better job, keeps me better informed on substantive legal matters, and therefore indirectly impacts my career.

PP, PLS

I obtained my PLS and PP certificates in 2014. Although I still am working as a legal secretary, my skills and knowledge levels, along with my confidence has soared! My previous experience as a paralegal was specific to bankruptcy, but with a little more training and experience (now working in litigation), I hope to be able to qualify as a litigation paralegal in the near future.

I started at my firm over 16 years ago with no education and very little experience. My certifications have not only provided me with the information I need to become a strong member of the legal support staff at my firm, but have also given me the confidence I need to do more for the attorneys I work for. My peers also see me as a professional dedicated to my career and someone they can depend on for accurate information and excellent work product. In fact, without my certifications, I would not have been promoted to my current position. My certifications have also inspired me to share what I have gained with other NALS members by helping them prepare for their certification exams.

I just passed the PLS exam this last spring. Yay! I am proud of this accomplishment because studying for and taking the exam was very difficult, much harder than I thought it would be. I would have been a little disappointed if it had been easier. It gives the certification much more meaning, weight and credibility. With the PLS certification, I have an extra boost of confidence in my day-to-day work. Also, as an "older" assistant, if for any reason I needed to make an employment change, I feel strongly that the PLS certification will make me shine a little brighter than other applicants. However, I am very happy with my current position (going on 19 years at the same firm!), and passing the PLS exam has increased my value within the firm. Thanks very much to NALS for the career and leadership development opportunities!!

 PLS

I was not a NALS member when I sat for the PLS exam, having learned of the exam in a legal secretary textbook that I was using to teach an adult legal secretary class at a local technical school. I received study help -- as a nonmember -- by a local NALS member and sat for the two-day, seven-part exam in March of 1995. NOTHING can compare to the exhilaration I experienced when I received my letter in the mail with PLS after my name, and it was THE career-altering event in my life. I immediately joined NALS and became actively involved on the local, then state, then national level. Without exaggeration, passing the PLS exam is what placed me on the path of leadership in NALS, eventually serving as NALS President. All of this has given me legitimacy and enhanced my value to my firm and in the legal field as a respected legal professional. Further, because certification led to me taking on leadership positions, I feel as if I can handle anything and everything that comes my way, be it at work, home, or anywhere else. It is because of attaining PP and PLS certification that I am the person I am today. Nothing else has professionally impacted me as profoundly as certification.

My PLS and PP certifications represent personal achievement to me, and serve as affirmation that I have the skill set to market myself for higher level positions, should that become necessary. Upon initial certification as both PLS and PP, my employer recognized my achievement and ensured that my compensation was in line with industry standards within his practice area.

Going through ALP and PLS Legal Training Courses in my local area was one of the best career choices that I've made. This was purely a personal choice, since I'm not the typical legal assistant, working with attorneys in medical research and the mandatory compliance with federal laws. What I got out of it was a respect for the law and development of skills towards excellence at work. People ask what the certification stands for and I'm proud to tell them about that and NALS. I'm also proud to tell them what it really means to study, to have respect for the law, and to have readiness to support the attorneys' work.
