Carnival Booths at NALS Under the Big Top: Celebrating 90 Years!

Posted By NALS Foundation Trustees, Wednesday, July 3, 2019

NALS Under the Big Top Event - Little Rock, ARLadies and gentlemen, boys and girls, the NALS Foundation is looking for states, chapters, committees, or groups to host a carnival booth at NALS Under the Big Top: Celebrating 90 Years! We are seeking enthusiastic and creative people (and we know you are all creative in your own way) to create, design, and run a carnival booth at the event.  The booth possibilities are endless, and we would like to have a variety of booths where attendees can play, have fun, and win prizes! We want to keep this event positive and celebratory; after all, NALS is turning 90! The NALS Foundation will provide prizes for your group to pass out at the event, so you don’t need to worry about that! Trustees will be in attendance selling tickets for you to collect at your booth.  The most popular booth, the one who receives the most tickets by the end of the night, will win bragging rights and an award at the conclusion of the event!

So, contact your people and decide what type of booth you will host! Your state, chapter, committee, or group could host a fortune teller booth, bean bag toss, ring toss, ping-pong fish bowl toss, disk drop, face painting, balloon animal, potato sack race, or anything else your state, chapter, committee, or group can come up with.

There may be limitations regarding the space and/or restrictions from the hotel, so when your group has their idea, please contact NALS Foundation Trustee Mimi Mangrum Jackson at mimi@owattorneys.com for approval.  If you think that you are not creative enough to create and design a booth, you’re wrong.  There are several ready-made or easy-to-assemble ideas available for purchase at websites such as OrientalTrading.com, PartyCity.com, or Smile.Amazon.com.  Bonus: if you shop through Amazon Smile, your purchases can benefit the NALS Foundation.

We look forward to hearing from you with your booth ideas! Don’t forget to have your state, chapter, committee, or group members sign up to attend the conference and NALS Under the Big Top: Celebrating 90 Years! We look forward to seeing you there!

Stand Beside Me Do Your 90In July of 2019, NALS will celebrate our 90th anniversary.

NALS was founded in 1929 by Eula Mae Jett, a legal secretary who started the association to help out her friends in the legal support professional field do their jobs better.

Most of us know the history of NALS and some do not, you can find our history at NALS.org.

While the NALS Foundation Trustees were attending the NALS Foundation Retreat in Arlington, Texas earlier this year, we decided we wanted to foster our own sense of community and positivity. One way to forward our goal, we decided, was through volunteerism. Many of us participate in volunteer projects with our state and local chapters and individually, but we wanted to do something bigger. Our goal is to have the happiness and good feelings derived from being of service to others spread across the country.

To celebrate this pivotal NALS anniversary, the NALS Foundation has created the “Stand Beside Me. Do Your 90” campaign. We want to celebrate and give back to our communities.

We began brainstorming about how we could make an impact in Arlington to kick-off the campaign. We searched for local food banks, shelters, community centers, and anywhere that would accept our group volunteers to lend a hand. It was a struggle to find a place at the last minute, but the opportunity for us to volunteer at Mission Arlington appeared. We called and made the arrangements the day before, and we made plans to show up early the next morning. When we arrived, we met with the 90-year-old Mission Director, Tilly. She told us how grateful she and the rest of the volunteers were to have us there to help, and shared that 90 cents of every dollar raised by Mission Arlington goes directly back into the community. All references to 90 led us to believe that we were in the right place. We spent 90 minutes folding newsletters and stuffing envelopes. We did this enthusiastically as we talked with other volunteers of all ages. We met women, men, students, and other volunteers from the Arlington area. Some were there because they had been helped by Mission Arlington. Some were there because they simply believe in Mission Arlington’s mission and vision. Others were there, like us, to give back to their community. We left the mission happy, energetic, and enthusiastic about what lay ahead for us for the remainder of the retreat.

Our challenge to each of you is to Stand Beside Me and Do Your 90. We are encouraging everyone to take 90 minutes of your time to volunteer, either individually or as a group. There are so many organizations where you can donate your time and energy. We know this is a little unusual since the NALS Foundation is typically asking for your donations. We believe that this campaign will allow everyone to participate because everyone has the same 525,600 minutes in their year bank to spend. By giving 90 minutes to an organization in your community, you will make a difference. You will feel good, and your sense of community will expand. All we ask is that when you do your 90 minutes of service, you post on the NALS Foundation page using the hashtag #StandBesideMeDoYour90 so we can spread the positivity.

Thank you all so much for your continued participation with NALS and the NALS Foundation! We are excited about this campaign, and we look forward to celebrating NALS 90th Anniversary by giving back.

Make sure you have liked the NALS Foundation Facebook page (Facebook.com/NALSFoundation), and that you stay tuned for more information about the NALS Foundation’s other plans to celebrate the NALS 90th Anniversary.

Conference Sweepstakes in a Whole New Way!

Posted By 2019 NALS Foundation Trustees, Friday, April 26, 2019
Updated: Friday, April 26, 2019

NALS 90th Anniversary is something special, so special, in fact, that the NALS Foundation is stepping up our sweepstakes game!  Winning sweepstakes prizes at the NALS Foundation Sweepstakes drawing while raising money for the NALS Foundation (a non-profit 501(c)(3) entity) is a highlight of the conference experience.  The excitement of buying your tickets for a chance to win gift cards, cash, and luxury items is incomparable.  Knowing that when you place your ticket in the bag, you may have the chance to win an item that you may not otherwise purchase for yourself is exhilarating. Hearing your name called for the prize that you have your heart set on is scream-inducing!  The room explodes with cheers as the winners run to fetch their prizes, hoping that they will be next.  The Sweepstakes drawing is energy inducing fun!  Then, how, you may ask, could the NALS Foundation make the Sweepstakes even more exciting?

Would you be more likely to spend more money at the NALS Foundation Sweepstakes, and thus receive a higher tax-deductible donation receipt, if you knew that you could win an item worth at least $90? That’s right friends! We are increasing the prize value for the NALS Foundation Sweepstakes items! The NALS Foundation is seeking donations with a retail value of at least $90 to celebrate the NALS 90th Anniversary! Our hope is to increase the value proposition for ticket purchasers to raise even more money to support the NALS Foundation programs! That means that for each ticket purchased, the buyer will have a chance to win a prize valued at $90. The more tickets you buy ($90 worth, perhaps?) the more chances you have to win at least one $90 item.

Does that mean that I cannot donate my smaller item? No.  In fact, we encourage you to work with friends, family, law firms, employers, vendors, suppliers, local chapters, and state associations to put together a bundle valued at no less than $90. If you and three other people pool your resources, you each only have to donate an item valued at $22.50 to meet the $90 minimum. You can also solicit donations from anyone you know or do business with.  You can reach out to your local communities to make donations to support the NALS Foundation.

Jewelry, watches, electronics, cash, gift cards, gift certificates, purchased items, and hand-crafted wares are all accepted.  You may ask, do I actually have to spend $90 to donate a $90 item? No. One thing that many who regularly donate to the NALS Foundation Sweepstakes do is visit an outlet mall. You can obtain valuable items from stores like Coach, Michael Kors, Fossil, Gap, Guess, Kate Spade, Merrell, Ralph Lauren, Quicksilver, Saks Fifth Avenue, Sketchers, Tommy Hilfiger, Vera Bradley, and more at a discount. The retail value of an item may be $90 or over, but you may be able to purchase the item at an outlet for less and donate it to the NALS Foundation Sweepstakes. You may also consider hand-making items to donate. Your time and talents have value. Consider what the items you make would cost someone to purchase in a store and then bundle a sampling of items together to reach $90, or team up with another creator to reach the $90 minimum.

Once you have an item or items you would like to donate to the NALS Foundation, here’s how you can. Click here to visit the online submission form. Log in to NALS.org then, submit an In-Kind Donation Form (available at the bottom of the linked page).  Package your item(s) and mail via the postal service of your choosing (i.e., USPS, FedEx, UPS, etc.) to the following address:  Orr Willhite, PLC, c/o Mimi Mangrum Jackson, 601 Southwest Drive, Jonesboro, AR  72401.  Donors who prefer to hand-carry donated items to the NALS Conference must also fill out the In-Kind Donation Form but may deliver the items to any NALS Foundation Trustee at the conference.  Please note that all donated items will be used for NALS Foundation fundraising purposes.  This means that your donation may be allocated to special fundraising projects, bundled with other items, and/or not necessarily be included in the Sweepstakes.  We appreciate all donations and look forward to celebrating NALS 90th Anniversary with all of you! Thank you for your continued support!
