Congratulations and welcome to the 2017 NALS Board, Darlene Howard Holt, Nakia Bradley-Lawson, Carl H. Morrison PP-SC, RP, AACP, Amylyn Riedling PP, PLS-SC, and Tara Hughes, PP-SC, ACP, RP. NALS looks forward to your passion, energy, innovation, and leadership.

There is no question that the 2016 NALS Board of Directors made great strides in carrying the association into the future. Among the Board's most significant achievements were their efforts to digitize the ALP mock exams and make them available online. We know there are more strides to be made and steps to be taken to ensure NALS remains a leading provider of continuing education, certification, and networking opportunities for the legal community. That is why NALS is energized and excited about the future of the organization under the direction of the 2017 Board of Directors. Continuing on the Board are Darlene Howard Holt, Nakia Bradley-Lawson, and Carl H. Morrison PP-SC, RP, AACP. They are joined this year by Amylyn Riedling PP, PLS-SC and Tara Hughes, PP-SC, ACP, RP.

Darlene Howard HoltDarlene Howard Holt, a legal assistant from Alexandria, Virginia, is continuing on the NALS Board in her second year as a Director and NALS President. Darlene spent the last year using her voice, sharing her fresh perspective, and finding her footing as a national leader. Undoubtedly, Darlene will continue to connect with legal professionals and build relationships inside and outside of our association in the coming year. Darlene is a dynamic and bold leader who is unafraid to take a risk, even if she might fail. Darlene's advice, in her own words, “Always believe in yourself! When people doubt you, when you're ready to give up and throw in the towel, when you're at rock bottom, look up, get up, and keep going. The only thing that can stop you from reaching your goal is you. Get out of your own way. Believe that you can!” Darlene believes in herself, she believes in NALS, and we are lucky to have her.

Nakia Bradley-LawsonAlso continuing on the NALS Board of Directors is Nakia Bradley-Lawson. Nakia served as Secretary during the 2016 term. Nakia is an active observer who concentrates on listening to what is spoken, as well as what is not. She is quiet, thoughtful, and kind and her innovative thinking and thoughtful approach to challenging situations sets her apart. Nakia works as a family law and taxation legal assistant at a large firm in Portland, Oregon. Nakia was inspired to join NALS after meeting the dynamic, intelligent, and ambitious women in her local chapter. She lives by the philosophy of Richard Tirendi—“If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room.” She believes it is important to surround herself with inspiring people, and she finds she is in the right room every time one is filled with NALS members.

Carl MorrisonCarl H. Morrison, PP-SC, RP, AACP is also continuing as a Director on the 2017 NALS Board. Carl's strengths lie in his ability to assess, analyze, and strategize. Carl has been a driving force in developing relationships with the leaders of NALA and NFPA, and he aims to find ways in which the associations can work together for the mutual benefit of all. He is well-connected and highly respected in the legal community, and he makes certain he is up to date on the most current trends and technology. Education, certification, and mentoring future paralegals are among Carl's passions. Despite relocating to Las Vegas, Nevada, and working as the only paralegal to in-house counsel for The Cosmopolitan Hotel, Carl remains an adjunct professor at Tulsa Community College where he has been teaching various courses in the paralegal program since 2012. NALS is pleased to have Carl on the 2017 Board where he can continue to share his experience and lead NALS into the future.

Amylyn RiedlingIf you do not know Amylyn Riedling PP, PLS-SC, you have probably heard her voice or felt her influence. Amylyn is excited to join the 2017 NALS Board as a Director. Amylyn has been a force for change and a voice for the advancement of the paralegal profession and NALS. In her home state of Washington, Amylyn tirelessly works to teach and mentor both seasoned and new legal professionals. She has fought to ensure NALS CLE is certified by the Washington State Bar Association for attorneys as well as Limited License Legal Technicians. When Amylyn attends an event, she fully participates and often emerges as the natural leader she is with her off-the-cuff opinions and suggestions for improvement. She is willing to take risks and give new ideas a try if she thinks they will make a difference. Her Facebook profile picture is a Nelson Mandela quote, “It always seems impossible until it's done.” It is that can-do spirit that drives her. She knows that her headstrong approach and outspoken personality are her greatest assets and potentially her greatest weaknesses. Amylyn is someone you want on your team and NALS is lucky she has agreed to be on ours.

Tara HughesLastly, joining the 2017 NALS Board is Tara Hughes, PP-SC, ACP, RP. Tara will serve as Secretary for the 2017 term. While Tara may be new to the NALS Board, she is no stranger to national leadership. Before joining the NALS Foundation as a Trustee, Tara served nationally as Region 8 Director and eventually served two terms as Foundation Chair where she honed her fundraising skills.  Tara is passionate about NALS and is determined to infuse fun and laughter into everything she does. She often says, “Why do it if it isn't fun?”  That's not to say that Tara does not work hard. She is the first one to roll up her sleeves and dive into difficult and daunting tasks. Her attention to detail and desire to do things in the most efficient, ethical, and accurate way are among her best qualities. She makes lists so she can check things off. She sets goals so she can knock them down. Tara has a deep and abiding sense of fairness and always makes sure everyone feels included. This makes her a natural relationship builder. NALS is looking forward to what and who Tara will bring to the table.

We want to say a special thanks to our outgoing Directors:

Audrey Saxton, PP, CLP-SC and Karen McElroy, PP, PLS-SC.
