How To: Certification Journal

Certification Journal Overview

This feature will allow individuals to track continuing legal education (CLE) hours to be used toward obtaining a CLE Award, recertification of a NALS certification, or obtaining or recertifying a Specialty Certificate. The Certification Journal may be found by navigating through the following steps:

  • Step 1: Log into the NALS website using your username/password.
  • Step 2: Click "Manage Profile" in the grey toolbar at the top of the page.
  • Step 3: Click "Professional Development."

Once you have reached the Certification Journal tool, you will see two tabs underneath the instructions language—one for "Certification/Programs" and one for "Journal Entries." An explanation of each tab is below for reference:

Journal Entries Tab

The "Journal Entries" tab will show all certification entries listed in your membership record, such as exam scores, individual CLE session credits, etc. To add credit hours to your certification journal, click "Add Entry" and follow the on-screen prompts. If you have a scanned copy of your CLE certificate, you can upload that too, if you wish. Below are step-by-step instructions for adding CLE credits to your journal:

  • Step 1: Click  Add Entry
  • Step 2: Follow the on-screen prompts
    • Is this entry for a Certificate or Program: Always select "Yes"
    • Certification/Program: Select "Continuing Legal Education (CLE)"
    • Credit Type: Select the credit type that most closely applies
    • Entry Date: Enter the date CLE was earned
    • Description: List the name of the program/session
    • Credits Expire: This date will be FIVE YEARS from the date earned. (i.e. 1 hour of CLE was earned on 09/01/2010 so the expiration date would be 09/01/2015.)
    • Score: (optional)
    • Activity Code: (optional)
    • Attachments: (optional)
  • Step 3: Click Submit

If you currently hold a NALS certification, CLE Award, or Specialty Certificate:

Individuals who hold more than one certification, award, or certificate with different expiration terms for each will only need to submit journal entries once. When submitting your recertification or renewal application(s), please filter and view your credits by date, type, etc. and print/email a transcript which shows CLE sessions earned during the validity period of your certification, award, or certificate.

Certifications/Programs Tab

The "Certifications/Programs" tab will show you a listing of certifications that you have completed or are working towards. Once your journal entries have been approved, a new line item will appear (i.e., Continuing Legal Education (CLE), Professional Paralegal, CLE Award, etc.) along with a summary of the expiration dates, number of credits earned, etc. Once the required hours have been obtained for each program you are working toward earning/renewing, you may submit your applications for recertification, CLE Award, or Specialty Certificate. A transcript of your CLE hours will be required. Below are step-by-step instructions for printing/emailing a transcript:

  • Step 1: Edit filter criteria
    • Status: Select "Approved"
    • Certification/Program: Select "Continuing Legal Education (CLE)"
    • Credit Type: Select "All Types" unless you are wanting to apply/renew a Specialty Certificate. In that case, you will need to pay close attention to the “Credit Type” drop down and be sure to select the appropriate CLE category
    • Credits Earned: Select dates that fall during your current validity period

  •  Step 2: Click Apply Filter
  • Step 3: Click  Print Transcript  or  Email Transcript
  • Step 4: Complete the certification/award/certificate application necessary, and be sure to include a copy of your transcript with your applications and fees.
