Speaker Bio: Attorney Stephen B. Samuels founded Samuels Reynolds Law Firm on the principles of hard work, dedication and service to families dealing with serious personal injuries. Stephen graduated from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington in 1983 with a degree in business management. For the next ten years he worked real jobs, including restaurants and HVAC, where he learned the reality of physical labor and the value of hard work. He enrolled in the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1994. He received his JD in 1997 from USC Law.

After law school, Stephen worked as an attorney for a larger law firm in the midlands. In August 2008, he left that firm and opened the Samuels Law Firm. He decided to keep the firm small to ensure personal service and allow enough time to give individual attention to his clients.

Stephen has tried hundreds of workers’ compensation cases, concentrating on legally complex issues. He speaks several times a year at workers’ compensation seminars and conferences. Stephen also handles personal injury cases, including trying cases before juries. He is an active appellate lawyer who has appeared before the South Carolina Supreme Court and South Carolina Court of Appeals. Originally from Cape Town, South Africa, Stephen lives in Columbia, SC with his wife Angi and their three dogs (Fergus, Tristan, and Spektor).

Sessions Included:

Opening Learning Lab Keynote

Bill More Without Charging More

Hunter Steele, CEO, Smokeball

This presentation addresses the “small law firm billing problem,” which is essentially that law firms are not necessarily tracking and billing for the valuable work they do. The presentation shares research that shows that, on average, legal fee earners are losing up to two hours a day when they do not track and address their billable hours adequately. While this may sound like a lawyer-only issue, this billing problem is just as important for paralegals and legal assistants because it is their work and time that is being undervalued. We will show how law firms can be more productive, which will free up more time, and allow law firms to take on new clients and be more profitable, a win-win for everyone involved.

Case Study Sessions

Improve Customer Experience & Generate Sales Leads

Lee Rennie, Founding Director, Melu

Lee provides a case study of one law firm's experience implementing live chat on their website - and how this improved the experience of their clients, generated new clients, and added staff efficiencies. Having live chat conversations can give insights into the needs of website visitors that would otherwise be difficult to get without asking for specific feedback. Common questions or needs from visitor can help legal support professionals understand their client base better.

Efficient UCC Filings

Ryan Baker, Vice President, Capitol Lien

Ryan has been engaged in due diligence solutions at Capitol Lien for over a decade. He is on the Board of the Secured Finance Network and leans on risk management skills to assist legal professionals nationwide. Jurisdictional inconsistencies, varying requirements, and risk involved with UCCs are pain points for many legal support professionals. In this session, Ryan will teach you how to streamline UCC filing procedures to maximize operational efficiency.

What it Takes to Stay on The Edge - The Costs of the 3 Stages of Tech Adoption

Alexander Theoharis, General Counsel and VP of Compliance, ABC Legal Services

Get a feel for the stage of technology adoption you’re in and where you want your firm to be - with examples from the legal industry in this session. Alexander Theoharis, General Counsel and VP of Compliance at ABC Legal Services, walks through each, digging into what it costs you and your practice to be behind or ahead - so you can determine where you want your firm and vendor partners to live on the tech adoption spectrum.

Learning Management Systems & Screen Recording Software

Nakia Bradley-Lawson, Director of Operations and Facilities, Gevertz Menashe

Learn how one firm manager utilized technology to elevate her firm's staff training.
